Why work with Barich

The Barich Method

How a group engagement actually runs, from the first conversation to the renewal after it — in the order the steps happen.

Get to know the group

  1. Step 1: We make contact

A first conversation about your group and what you have in place now.

  2. Step 2: We collect your census

Your employee and dependent roster, so carriers can rate the group.

  3. Step 3: We scope the work

What we handle, what we don't, and which rules apply at your size.

Shape the plan

  1. Step 4: We answer three questions

    • Retention: what keeps benefits from being the reason someone leaves.
    • Buy-ups: what sits above the base plan, and what the employer pays.
    • Extras: other products your employees would actually use.
  2. Step 5: We run the compliance debrief

The paperwork your group size calls for:

    • ERISA documents
    • COBRA, where it applies
    • Section 125 for pre-tax deductions
    • 1095-C forms at 50 or more employees
    • Part D creditable-coverage notices

Launch and support

  1. Step 6: We build the platform

Every employee gets access to their benefits on the platform you choose.

  2. Step 7: We set the enrollment window

Timed to your effective date, onsite or by phone, usually about two weeks.

  3. Step 8: We run open enrollment

We collect every document, which protects the group.

  4. Step 9: We stay on it

Employee changes, questions and the next renewal.

Funding models

How your plan is funded

Three ways to pay for group coverage. Which one fits depends on your group's claims history, your appetite for risk, and what you need your renewal to do.

Fully Insured

Predictable, simple, fully protected.

The traditional approach, and still the right one for many groups. You pay a fixed premium, the carrier takes all the claims risk, and your rates are set by age and geography rather than your employees' health history. No underwriting, no surprises, no claims exposure. For groups with unpredictable claims or limited administrative bandwidth, the certainty is worth a great deal.

Who this fits:
  • groups with unpredictable claims or limited administrative bandwidth.

Level Funded

Get rewarded for a healthy group.

Under a fully insured plan, a healthy workforce pays the same rates as everyone else in the pool. Level funding changes that. Your group is priced on its own claims experience, your monthly cost stays fixed and predictable, and stop-loss coverage caps your exposure if a bad month hits. If claims come in under what you funded, you may share in the surplus. You also get claims reporting you'd never see on a fully insured contract — real data to make real decisions at renewal.

Who this fits:
  • groups with favorable claims experience looking to stop subsidizing the wider market.

MERP (Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan)

Lower the premium without lowering the benefit your employees feel.

Moving your group to a higher-deductible plan brings the premium down meaningfully. A MERP then reimburses a portion of each employee's deductible directly, so their out-of-pocket experience stays close to what it was. Your total cost becomes premium plus actual reimbursed claims — which in most years lands below the premium on the richer plan.

Who this fits:
  • groups facing a difficult renewal who don't want to pass the increase to employees.

Talk to someone about your group plan

We will look at what you have now, what it is costing you, and what else is available to a group your size.

Get in touch to:

  • Review the plan you have in place now
  • Compare fully insured, level funded and MERP funding
  • Check where your group stands on ERISA, COBRA, Section 125 and 1095-C
  • Understand what your renewal is actually doing
  • Walk through what a change would mean for your employees
  • Ask a question before open enrollment starts

Have your current plan documents and your renewal letter to hand. The conversation gets more useful with them, and we can start without them.
